Welcome to 2009
I’m a few days late for a New Years post, but here it goes anyway.
I can only think of one New Years resolution at this point: to save up some money for grad school. I’m counting on my tuition being paid for by fellowships and TA jobs, so by some I mean enough for books, food and entertainment. And plane tickets should I end up somewhere distant. I should mention that grad school is two and a half years away for me, so I have some time.
In order to help me with this resolution, on New Years Eve I went down to Philadelphia to a PNC Bank branch and set up a Virtual Wallet. You should check it out, although I’m not sure of it’s availability in different parts of the country. You get three different accounts called spend, reserve and growth. Spend is a noninterest earning checking account, reserve is an interest earning checking account and growth is a savings account which earns a very competitive rate. I can save in the growth account and not be tempted to just blow it all. There are all sorts of other features with the three accounts, my favorite being free overdraft to the second account and then the third. As you know if you know me personally, you know that I need that.
I had an interesting conversation with my grandfather, who is rapidly approaching his 80th birthday, about how we often refer to this year as ‘09, but his mother was born in ‘07. 1907, of course. This confuses him occasionally. It’s all about perspective.

Yes, indeed, you need that overdraft protection. Imagine how much money you could have saved if you had discovered this virtual wallet program earlier.
